Our City Governance
The City of Madisonville is a governmental body that works to create a government "of the people, by the people and for the people" for our community.
Our commitment is rooted in serving our community with integrity, surpassing standard performance benchmarks, delivering outstanding customer service, and a steadfast dedication to being the best for The Best Town on Earth.
Executive Authority
The Mayor holds the executive authority, responsible for enforcing the Mayor-Council Plan, city ordinances, and orders, as well as all applicable statutes. The Mayor supervises all city departments, ensuring the efficient functioning of city officers and employees, and soliciting reports from each department as required by ordinances.
Legislative Authority
The elected Council of the city exercises legislative authority. However, the Council does not perform executive functions except those explicitly assigned to it by statute.
City Council Meetings
Our City Council meetings provide a platform for transparent governance and community involvement. Scheduled on the first and third Monday nights of each month at 4:30 p.m., these meetings take place at the City Council Chambers, 77 N. Main St, Madisonville, KY 42431 (prevailing local time). In case the regular meeting coincides with a legal holiday, it will be rescheduled for the next day at the same hour. Special meetings may be convened by the Mayor or upon a written request from a majority of the Council.
Our City Council, vested with legislative authority, focuses on its designated functions without engaging in executive functions unless mandated by statute. Through these meetings, we aim to ensure the democratic representation of our community's needs and aspirations, fostering an engaged and informed citizenry.
